The association, Friends of Wellers Bay,
was formed in 1987 and then incorporated in 1989. The original object of the corporation were to: 1. provide education and advice on ways to restore and preserve the ecological environment of Wellers Bay; and 2. provide the resources necessary for the preservation and protection of the ecological environment of Wellers Bay The main focus was to dredge open a channel between Lake Ontario and the Bay and instal and maintain a break-wall in that vicinity, for the health of the Bay. The Corporation also sought to provide information to the public for the purpose of promoting and enhancing the Wellers Bay environment and to liaise with others who would carry on similar objects. |
Dredging has since become the responsibility of the City of Quinte West (with funding from Prince Edward County),
while the FOWB Inc Board, on behalf of its members, remains an active voice
working to improve all aspects of life in, on and around the Bay.

With the handover of the dredging of the North Channel and then the baton pass of setting buoys to mark the channel came a re-evaluation of the goals and functions of the organization. Furnished with an understanding of the history of FOWB and with survey data of our members and greater community and subject to a strategic analysis,
the Mission, Vision and Priority Goals for FOWB were updated.
