Communities of Wellers Bay

Picture

Barcovan

The beach area of Barcovan at the end of Carter Road marks the most Western part of Wellers Bay.  The dredged channel there serves as the main throughway for boat traffic between Lake Ontario and the protected waters of the Bay.  The breakwall helps to keep the channel protected.

Barcovan Beach road is a predominantly cottage area and Carter road has a number of Wellers Bay's campgrounds.  From the mainland, there is fairly easy access to the barrier islands, which are usable Crown Land (unlike the islands to the south - see below).

Carrying Place / Garden Ville

A tale of two cities - residents on the Northwest side of Fort Kente - Old Portage Road (County Road 64) are in The City of Quinte West (the development at Young's Cove, for example), but those on the Southeast side of '64' live in the City of Prince Edward (aka The County).

The settlement of Asa Weller (1761-1825) and family is believed to be the first known European Canadian roots around what is now called Wellers Bay.  It is also the site of a primitive marine railway and the oldest road in Ontario, which was once a portage route between the Bay of Quinte and Wellers Bay.

Today, this up and coming area is home to the Post Office, landscaping businesses, and shops.  Carrying Place boasts a new Pharmacy and a Service Station (inland along Hwy 33 and the only ones in the island's North West) as well as a Food Market and Boutique (all on the Quinte side).  There's also a public park and ball diamond on the county side of Carrying Place.

While there is no official boat launch, there are let ins that folks can use to get to and on the water

Consecon

The largest settlement area in West PEC, Consecon's United Empire Loyalist history began in 1802 and the village, once a busy shipping destination and home to canneries, was a bustling tourist locale where many would come in order to stage for hunting and fishing.

Now with no docks, no railway and a highway bypass, Consecon is home to a small number of businesses (a corner store, restaurants, shops and service providers) as well as community buildings (United Church, Library, Legion, Masonic Lodge) but maintains a serene and quiet pace.

The public boat launch is located just south of the village on Edward Drive though swimmers and kayakers have an abundance of ways to access the waters of Wellers Bay.
