Wellers Bay

Wellers Bay water quality is rated EXCELLENT. This means the bay maintains healthy levels of total phosphorus, minimal algae blooms, and a trophic state that supports diverse aquatic life.

Since the early 2000s, Friends of Wellers Bay has maintained a rigorous water testing program. Each year, volunteers collect water samples from key monitoring locations across the bay, testing for phosphorus, pH, dissolved oxygen, and other indicators of ecosystem health. These measurements are analyzed and compared to historical data, giving us a clear picture of how the bay is changing over time.

Why does this matter? What we measure in the water tells us about the bay's ability to support fish, birds, plants, and the human communities that depend on it. Regular testing allows us to detect changes early and respond to emerging threats.

Wellers Bay is a living system. Its waters, shorelines, marshes, and uplands create habitat for a remarkable diversity of species.

Birds: Over 200 bird species have been documented in and around the bay, from year-round residents to migratory species that use the bay as a vital stopover during spring and autumn migrations. Great Blue Herons, Bald Eagles, osprey, and dozens of waterfowl species make this place home.

Fish: The bay supports populations of bass, perch, pike, and other species that sustain both the ecosystem and recreational fishing traditions.

Plants: Wetland plants, aquatic vegetation, and shoreline flora create the structure that supports the entire food web. Indigenous plant communities, if protected, provide shelter and food for wildlife.

This ecological diversity depends on the health of the water, the integrity of the shoreline, and the presence of connected habitat. Every species plays a role.

Wellers Bay is surrounded by distinct and vibrant communities, each with their own character and connection to the water.

Picton is the largest centre, home to shops, restaurants, schools, and the cultural heart of Prince Edward County. Consecon, Carrying Place, and Waupoos are smaller villages with deep roots in the region. Barcovan, Garden Ville, and Sophiasburgh are quieter neighbourhoods where families have lived on the water for generations.

Across all these communities are people who know Wellers Bay intimately: families who have summered here for decades, commercial operators, municipal staff, conservation professionals, and neighbours who simply understand that this place matters. FOWB is a network of these people, connected by shared commitment to care.

The bay's distinctive hourglass shape is defined by two major channels and a series of connected basins. Its sand spit, one of the longest undeveloped sand formations on Lake Ontario, creates the bay's unique geography and protects the interior waters from direct exposure to the lake.

Water depths vary, with shallow areas near the shore ideal for wading and exploring, and deeper channels where currents move water between the bay and Lake Ontario. Seasonal changes transform the bay dramatically: spring brings warming and the return of migratory birds; summer opens it for swimming and boating; autumn sees massive migrations; and winter silence settles over the ice.

The bay is a place for walking the shoreline, launching a boat, watching the sunset, or simply sitting in silence and remembering why this place matters.
